Description
Summary:This article is the result of an analysis of the alternation between verbal forms on conditional sentences headed by the conjunction -SE and that rest under the notion of the irrealis (GIVÓN, 1995). Ex.: Se eu tivesse dinheiro, compraria/comprava/ia comprar/iria comprar uma. Based on the principles of Variationist Sociolinguistics (WEINREICH; LABOV; HERZOG 1968, LABOV 1972, 1994, 2001),the results show that the use of the imperfect has often advanced. However, even with the increase of the imperfect, the conditional presents resistance in certain contexts, that can be explained from the notion of Language Market (BOURDIEU, 1977).We will thus privilege the analysis of the phenomenon based on two groups of social factors (age and schooling). We seek, with our reflections, to point and reinforce the intimate relationship between linguistic structure and social structure, as well as the heterogeneity inherent in languages.
