Maintenance of feeder roads in Africa. vital component for rural development. After drawing attention to some considerations concerning feeder roads, the author, stresses on the economic importance of their maintenance in developing countries. He examines the reasons for and types of deterioration encountered, discusses techniques and means used to maintain them, and examines the repercussion of a lack of maintenance. He gives an estimated cost for maintenance which is low compared with rehabilitation or investment values. Some factors which may influence policy and implement strategy are considered, such as institutional arrangements, technical and financial assistance, finance problems, and access to technological information. Finally, several recommendations are suggested.
