Summary: | The article builds on the recent discovery of seventeen new letters written by Lorenzino de’ Medici (1514-1548), the assassin of the first Duke of Florence, Alessandro de’ Medici. Almost all the documents, which were largely found in the National Archives of Florence, date from a period that corresponds with Lorenzino’s exile. He was forced to flee Florence immediately after having committed this “tyrannicide” in January 1537. These missives give us a unique perspective on the assassin’s world during the years that he spent between Mirandola, France and Venice, and allow us to glimpse a hereto unknown fact: on one hand, his numerous political relationships, as well as the plots to re-conquer Florence that he drew up with republican exiles; on the other, the emotional links that united him with this family and the practical and daily problems linked to his difficult situation as an exile. |
