Summary: | This article defends the relevance of a “resourcial” approach to sustainable development. It argues that sustainable management of (common pool) resource systems – be they natural, infrastructural or cultural – is a sine qua non condition to sustainability. Because resource issues are not only “environmental”, but also “social” and “economic”, the resourcial approach relates and connects the three dimensions of sustainability with one another by emphasizing their interdependence. In this article, we present an analytical framework based on the concepts of “resource” and “institutional resource regime” and illustrate these two concepts using an empirical application to two infrastructural resources – the air and rail transportation networks.
