The author studies the connections between Mamin’s novel and the works of his predecessors and contemporaries, in particular the novel by F. M. Reshetnikov One's Own Bread. Similarly to Mamin, Reshetnikov depicted the life of common people in a small provincial town, the life of a girl trying to find her way. The author studies the toponymy in Mamin-Sibiryak's novel. The literary context is represented by works of the 1880s writers, such as A. P. Chekhov, M. N. Albov and others.
