Under conditions of globalization traditional moral values in the modern Azerbaijani family are subjected to change. The characteristic of a family's activity, which is a complicated social phenomenon, is determined by a number of different conditions. Karl Marx points out that the relationships within a family are linked to the community: "Like it was in the past, as the society develops, the family needs to develop and as the society changes the family needs to change as well. It is a product of a social system." As a family shapes up in every historical period, it remains as its important social institution. In a condition of contemporary global sociocultural changes, families lose its institutional importance; traditional values and attitudes in marital relationships change in certain ways. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations of 10.10.1948 under the number 217 (111), states: " The family is the natural and fundamental group unit of society and is entitled to protection by society and the State." By the UN General Assembly Resolution of the 20th of September, 1993 May 15th is worldwidly celebrated as the International Family Day. In the early years of the Soviet Union, on the territory of USSR including Azerbaijan the communist approach to the "Soviet family" as a "family bourgeois residue" was defeated. Later, the policy of the Soviet government on the "Soviet family" changed: the motto "family is the essence of society" was put forward. What was the main reason for this slogan? What factors contributed to the formation of traditional family values of Azerbaijanis as well as what is happening in modern times, and what are the reasons for the current UN policy on "family"? The article is mainly dedicated to research such issues. What role do family and family values play for the Azerbaijanis? Azerbaijan is a religiously and ethnically diverse country. Historically, neighboring peoples have developed a number of similar features in the field of culture, traditions, family and household. The traditional family values of Azerbaijanis are based on the Caucasus factor, the Turkish factor and the Islamic factor. In modern times the basis of sociocultural success of Azerbaijanis in the field of family relations is subjected to certain changes. Changes in marital relationships are reflected in the relationships between spouses, relatives, relationships of children and parents, child's upbringing and so on. As K.Marks points out, changes in marital relationships are historically a natural process. The removal of the "iron curtain" after the collapse of the USSR, as well as the processes of globalization have caused certain changes in the values of the Azerbaijanis. Globalization processes have led to the transformation of traditional values in marital relationships. At the same time, the rise of national feelings and the increasing need for national and spiritual values emerged as a reflection of these processes. Socio-economic, political, ideological changes in the society, and thus sociocultural changes, are accompanied by a number of fundamental values, in particular the transformation of family values. Historical experience shows that economics and morality are interrelated. As the economy develops, family values also change. The financial dependance of one on another decreases which leads to the replacement of large families with small. Keeping traditional family values and passing them on to the new generations is one of the main problems that worries the current generation. Parents’ and grandparents’ relations have a special place within family relationships. It is important to consolidate and enhance the traditional national-moral values in personal and public consciousness to stabilize the marriage and family institute and restore the high family values, as well as prevent future negative marital relationships. Thus, the modern family is a unique social institution that develops in complex socio-political and moral conditions. The values that come from modern world influence and traditional family values are opposed to each other. |
