The genus Glaphyrus was described by Latreille in 1802 (not 1804 or 1807) with the type species Melolontha serratulae Fabricius, 1792 by monotypy. Designation of nominal species Melolontha cardui Fabricius, 1787 (= G. maurus (Linnaeus, 1758) as a type species of the genus Glaphyrus is invalid. Ménétriés described G. globulicollis in 1836 and just redescribed it in 1839.
