Summary:Critics often divide Machado de Assis's work into a youthful, romantic and militant phase, and another one of maturity, skeptic and ironic. The examination of his theatrical work seems to indicate that at the end of his life the « wizard » tempered his acidity with the affection and love brought by married life. His dramatic production also allows us to understand how he dealt with the romantic concept of love and the position of women in the literary and dramatic treatment of this theme in Western tradition.
