Summary:Despite the increasing importance of science in the modern world and its various fields of application, the term “translation” is still interesting for researchers. This is due to the question: are we dealing with the same definition of the term “translation” or with different definitions? The importance of studying the term “translation” in the modern world is undeniable, since it is a link between different fields of knowledge. Translation is becoming an increasingly open field for discussing ideas, opinions, and mutual actions of a particular activity. It is studied in such a section of translation studies as the general theory of translation. The purpose of the study is to classify the definitions of the term “translation” in accordance with the linguistic, communicative and sociological approach. The object of the study is the term “translation”. The subject of the research is the content of the definition of the term “translation” from the linguistic, communicative and sociological approaches. The results of the research: the classification and grouping of the definitions of the term «translation» according to the corresponding approaches; the author's definition of the term “translation” is proposed. The material for the study was the definitions of the term “translation”, taken from various dictionaries, encyclopedias, reference books, scientific works, textbooks and textbooks. The novelty of the research is the author's definition of the term “translation”, by which it is proposed to understand the process of processing information of an oral or written text expressed in one language by means of another language using linguistic, communicative or sociological approaches, depending on the meaning of the original and in accordance with the ethical responsibility of the translator.
