Summary: | The aim of the paper deals with the historical, socio-cultural and music factors that have influenced the formation of professional choral art in China. Research methodology. The offered paradigm of study of the factors, which has influenced the formation of professional choral art in China, allows connecting culturological, historical and genre and style approaches in the context of musicological discourse.
Results. The beginnings of choral art in China are distinguished due to the missionary, educational activity of European figures and musicians of the 16th — 19th centuries, the educational reformatory orientation of state reforms in the country at the turn of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The missionaries distributed the Christianity-inspired Renaissance polyphonic music.
Novelty. The factors of the formation of the professional choral art of China, which had European origins, are singled out. The genre of the school song was of historical importance in the formation of choral art in China, combining national traditions with European ones and the synthesis of genre models of school massive songs using European and American musical themes. The style of chorals and folk songs was copied by Chinese composers and added to school curricula to teach children important life lessons; and patriotic large ensemble pieces were created and performed to inspire nationalism.
