Summary: | This paper proposes a descriptive interpretation of the territory of Attica in order to determine how ritual constructions define or contribute to the urbanization. We attempt to discern the features that characterize the archaic period and show that these features actually influence the choice of the location and the shape of the constructions within sanctuaries, without forgetting that sanctuaries themselves affect the organization of the urban territory. In this context, we tackle inevitable questions regarding certain terms such as urbanization, religion, ethnic identity and polis. In the region of Attica we may distinguish secondary units that are more in contact with neighbouring regions than with the civic center of Athens, which allows us to notice a lack of uniformity across Attica. But we also refer to all those elements that are common within the region of Attica and help us understand the evolution and complexity of the political process. Several examples such as Brauron, Eleutherai and Laurion, very common in literature, will guide us to this interpretation.
