Description
Summary:This diagnostic included the evaluation of six veterinary clinics of Guayaquil, Ecuador. Hazardous waste is any not-wanted material that can be considered a threat to human health and environment, this means, that this material can be explosive, flammable, infectious, radioactive, corrosive and/or toxic. The veterinary clinics were selected in function of their infrastructure and service capacity, where the current situation on the management of their wastes and the level of compliance of existing laws, were evaluated, for which, surveys and interviews were conducted to the veterinary doctors of each clinic and authorities. The level of non-compliance of different regulations is up to 72% for evaluated clinics, concerning generation, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste. Also, it was shown that the ignorance of law is the main problem, related from not having an adequate disposal of hazardous waste. Finally, recommendations are made based on what was evaluated, and a methodological guide is presented as a tool for achieving an adequate waste management for this kind of activity.
