Description
Summary:In Slovakia, Eurasian Eagle-Owl uses for nesting mainly rock formations and stone quarries, which are surrounded by sufficient amount of open areas important as foraging territories. Since 80’s of the last century, eleven nest sites has been known in the National park Malá Fatra. Precised and long-term systematic survey of eagle-owl was not conducted in the area. I have performed acoustic monitoring of the entire area of the National park accompanied with field survey of 18 sites. The sites with known historical breeding of the species, potential and known nest sites were surveyed. Altogether four breeding sites of the eagle-owl were found in the area in 2012–2017; only two remained active after 2014. This results suggest the species population decrease (from 4.9 pair/100 km2 to 0.9 pair/100 km2) and the concentration of the species at foothills of Malá Fatra Mts up to ca.750 m a.s.l.
