The scope of this Special Topic is to present new insights in the nonlinear-optical characteristics of these 2D crystals, both from a theoretical and an experimental point of view, and to address their potential for practical applications. Particular attention is paid to the role of intraband and interband transitions, the dynamics of the photocarriers excited in the materials, the analogies and differences between graphene and its 3D and 1D counterparts, and the combination of 2D materials with waveguiding and/or resonance structures.
