BIODIESEL – THE POTENTIAL OF SLAVONIA AND BARANJA

Due to the rapid increase in oil prices and world energy, biofuels are imposed as part of the solution to the problem of energy crisis. Biodiesel, with bioethanol, is the most common liquid biofuel in the world. In 2011 total production of biodiesel in Croatia was 7,551 tonnes which makes the utilization of current capacities for the production of biodiesel of only 11.8%. Five counties of Slavonia and Baranja region comprise more than 54% of the 1.1 million hectares of arable land in Croatia. In Croatia oilseeds are traditionally sown, such as: oilseed rape (rapeseed), sunflower and soybean. In the last few years on more than 95,000 hectares per year. Taking into account the average yield per years under review we come to the fact that it is possible to produce more than 81,000 tonnes of biodiesel or 70,000 toe using oil crops as biofuel feedstock.
