Summary:The Italian author Ugo Foscolo (1778-1827) developed his literary activity in a very peculiar moment of Italian history: the instauration of Napoleons government in the peninsula. Foscolo has not remained apathetic to the political matters which affected his time, and this article aims to analyze how the authors ideas on the function of poetry are related to his activities as an intellectual, essayist and critic of society.
