Summary:The Turkish government has been pursuing a goal to turn Istanbul into aregionalcentre for finance and then, an international one.However, creating aninternationalfinancial centre where international demand and supply of fundsmeet is not an easy process. In this context,we aimed toexamine the currentstatus and the potential of Istanbul to become an international financial centre. Inorder to reach the aim of the study, firstly,the characteristics of an internationalfinancial centre have been explained and a brief overview ofthe Turkishgovernment’sofficial plans of development of theinternational financial centrehavebeen given. Then,the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats ofIstanbul havebeen analyzed.Finally,we have made assessments and put forwardsome suggestions.
