Description
Summary:Purpose. The purpose of the article is to examine the original text of the novel Jane Eyre by Сh. Brontë and its translations in order to identify the ways of transferring precedent phenomena from English into Russian (based on the translations by V.O. Stanevich and I.G. Gurova). Method or methodology of the work. The comparative method as well as the methods of linguo-cultural and quantitative analysis is applied in the article. Results. The precedent phenomena highlighted in the text were divided into thematic groups, such as historical figures, biblical characters and plots, characters and quotes from literary works. The comparative analysis allowed to establish the fact that precedent phenomena of the source language are generally preserved in the target language, with transcription and transliteration being the dominant ways of translation. It was also determined that I.G. Gurovа did transfer all precedent phenomena, while several precedent phenomena were omitted in the translation by V.O. Stanevich. Practical implications. The results of the comparative analysis can be used in linguocultural studies devoted to precedent phenomena, as well as in the studies on the theory of translation that deal with the problems of transferring precedent phenomena from one language into another.
