Summary: | The causes of forest fires: survey of shepherds in the wilaya of Tizi Ouzou (Algeria). The Department of Tizi Ouzou is very affected by forest fires, with an annual average of 175 fires and 3,092 ha of areas burned (period 1986-2017). The rate of unknown causes is very high in the study area, it is 90% according to the official statistics by the General Directorate of Forests. This research aims to study the origin of forest fires in 12 municipalities of the wilaya of Tizi Ouzou belonging to the 5 dairas most affected by forest fires (Azeffoun, Tigzirt, Azazga, Bouzguene, Draa El Mizan). It deals with the statements of shepherds, a social body never considered in forestry research, but which is strictly in connection with the phenomenon and often criminalized as a major cause. The survey was conducted by means of ad hoc questionnaires filled in face-to-face meetings with 482 shepherds selected at random in forest villages. The fires result mainly from voluntary causes, respectively: pastoral fires for grazing renewal, political fires, incineration of uncontrolled landfills. At a distance follow the fires caused by negligence: throwing of cigarette butts, agricultural work (burning after cleaning, burning of stubble) and forestry activities in the forest.
