Summary: | Ecclesiastical biographies by Pedro Salazar de Mendoza (1549-1629), then a canon in the Toledo cathedral, significantly differ from the standards of the genre. The archbishops who were chosen for study (Pedro González de Mendoza, Juan Pardo de Tavera et Bartolomé Carranza de Miranda) do not correspond to the norms established by the Council of Trent for episcopalian dignity and its incumbents. The author will then seemingly reject any manipulation in the historical discourse, as well as exemplarity as regards real life, in favour of chronistic discourse. He can thus preserve his characters’ memory and the apologetic aspect to his work, and fashion some new form of exemplarity from the ordinary prelate and accessible to his readership.
