| Summary: | <p>Knowledge Economy has emerged as a key factor of regional competitiveness and therefore urban differentiation in the European Union, making it necessary to know how the metropolitan area of Bilbao is positioned, the main metropolis in the Basque Country. Over the last three decades Bilbao has seen a diversification of production, a consolidation of a regional innovation system, and a re-adjustment of the urban hierarchy which has earned it international recognition. It is interesting to know to what extent the knowledge economy is relevant in volume and localization strategies for its innovative transmission capacity to other economic subsectors and connected urban spaces. Assessing to what extent the territory, which is understood as a special socio-economic configuration at a specific location, actively matters in the economic knowledge of the metropolitan area of Bilbao is the driving force behind this paper.</p> |
