Summary: | CHANGES IN THE ETHNIC RETAIL TRADE IN THE SUBURBS OF BARCELONA (2004-2011). A DEBATE ABOUT PROCESSES OF ETHNOGENTRIFICATION. This paper aims to explore an early process of
ethnogentrification, previously reported by the local media, in a working-class suburban district of Barcelona. Following a brief description of the research carried out in 2004 (published in 2006) on the urban and social changes in this study area, this paper presents a comparative analysis between the continuities and changes on ‘retailscape’ in the period of 2004 to 2011, by updating its ethnic-retail cartography. Comparative results will allow to opening up a debate about some lexical abuses on the use of the term ‘ethno-gentrification’ in the specific context of Mediterranean cities.
