Design and Development of Microcontroller Based Fluoride Meter

A microcontroller based fluoride meter for the measurement of fluoride in liquids is designed and developed. It is based on the principle that ion-sensitive glass electrode and a reference electrode are dipped in an aqueous solution, they generate an emf, which is proportional to the ion concentrati...

A high-input impedance unity-gain amplifier is used for measuring in the solution. An interfacing circuitry along with the necessary software to the microcontroller, so as to use the microcontroller for measurement, has been developed. Atmel’s AT89C51 Microcontroller is used in the present study. Automatic temperature compensation along with temperature display is incorporated. Further, an LCD module is interfaced with the microcontroller in 4-bit mode, which reduces the hardware complexity. The results are displayed on LCD and Personal Computer simultaneously. Software is developed in C using Ride’s C-cross compiler. The system is reasonably successful in measuring ion concentration with an accuracy of ±0.1 %. Fluoride concentration measurement is very essential to warn and educate people on its toxic biological effects. The paper deals with the hardware and software details. http://www.sensorsportal.com/HTML/DIGEST/january_2011/P_740.pdfAT89C51 microcontrollerFluoride ionTemperature compensation and Ride’s C-cross compiler.
