Summary:Institutional regulation of research ethics raises a number of difficult issues, especially for the social sciences. The article begins with a review of the main criticisms. Then the institutional regulation system is analyzed in greater depth on two significant points: the vulnerability of research participants and the transformation of science into expert knowledge. The article concludes with suggestions on how sociologists can take back ownership of research ethics.
