This paper describes the work performed by KSRC Laboratory of Ship Dynamics and Maneuvrability to investigate behavior of surface ships in case of emergency, flooding and foundering. Materials and methods. This paper describes a series of sinkage tests performed at KSRC on a series of surface ships to obtain real-time foundering parameters by means of Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), dwelling on their methods and processing of output kinematic parameters. The paper also discusses mathematical simulation results yielded by the newly developed mathematical model, including the description of the forces that act on a sinking ship. The paper also gives a case study of sinking ship behavior assessment by means of CFD package with Overset Mesh and Dynamic Fluid Body Interaction (DFBI) tools, comparing the results of development mathematical model calculation versus those obtained through CFD calculation and versus the test data. All these three methods are interconnected and complementary. Main results. This paper gives the results of mathematical simulation and physical modeling of sinking ship dynamics, as well as verification of the developed mathematical model taking the test data into account. The paper also illustrates how to apply CFD calculations in dynamic studies. Conclusion. The three above-mentioned prediction methods for ship foundering parameters have their advantages and disadvantages but in this case they complement each other, yielding required results. Selection of solution methods for this kind of task is always case-specific and depends on given test laboratory, its expertise and capabilities (i.e. available test facilities, computer resources and mathematical models).https://transactions-ksrc.ru/eng/archive/Research-of-surface-ships-sinkage-due-to-emergency-flooding/cfddfbifounderingmodel testssinkage parametershydrodynamic characteristicsmathematical model of ship movementcfddfbi
