The area around the Fonseca Gulf, shared by El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua, acquired a great economic and strategic pre-eminence in those years. The dominant groups encouraged a concept of common space, seeking the support of other interregional actors based on their political mobilization and economic interests.
