The Madeirans put the idea of the island as a center of the world before the smallness of geographic space: in this way they claim its anti-insularity point of view. The reality, therefore, determines its opposite. The idea of poio – terrace – as a form of delineation and affirmation of their own space and their own lives strengthens the isolation and insularisation. Mentally speaking, everything in Madeirans’ life is reduced to the so-called poio. This is where the Madeirans find the space to build their houses and the land that allows them to exploit natural resources, although they never guarantee the subsistence. This is where they build their world, isolated and insularized. We are facing a reality that is a proof of insularity, seeming, often, a kind of double insularity. Starting by this, we will show the idea and the physical presence of poio as a form of affirmation and negation of the anti-insularity discours.http://www.studistorici.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/15_VIEIRA.pdfanti-insularitàinsularitàisolanitàMaderaregioni ultraperifericheanti-insularityinsularityislandnessMadeiraultraperipheral regions
