Summary: | The first half of the 20th century witnessed an intense process of drug industrialization and the invention of new therapeutic groups. In this paper, the authors present the results of an ongoing investigation about the historical process of drug regulation in Portugal, highlighting the creation of the Comissão Reguladora dos Produtos Químicos e Farmacêuticos – CRPQF (Regulatory Commission of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Products – 1940) and the laws founded on scientific reasoning, whose goals were to benefit population health, to better the quality of drugs and to regulate this sector both legally and economically. The main sources were the legal diplomas, documents from8 the Infarmed, I.P. archive, pharmaceutical journals and Infarmed, I.P. publications.
