Description
Summary:This paper will examine the verbalization patterns involving a- and en- prefixes and their suffixed counterparts (apresentar vs. empresentar, acontecer vs. contecer, asegurar vs. segurar, forrar vs. aforrar vs. enforrar). Although recent studies on the diachronic development of denominal and deadjectival verbs in Spanish have highlighted the need to take into account external factors or different varieties in order to explain the semantic overlapping of these derivatives, no such research has been undertaken. The present study is concerned with finding out if and to what extend these verbalization patterns are constrained by language use, paying special attention to dialectal divergences. The material has been extracted from the Corpus de Documentos Españoles Anteriores a 1800. The interplay between morphological features and dialectology permits to draw some revealing facts, such as the dialectal character of suffixed derivatives.
