Abstract : The present article features a transcription of the observation notes taken during a consultant’s one-hour professional development counselling interview with a female employee looking for a new career direction. Revealing the uncertainties and dilemmas that arise when work-related factors prevent the continuation of employment, this case study of a woman named Catherine raises questions about how professional issues of this sort are best dealt with outside of the workplace and/or of working hours. It also highlights the temporal dissonance between an individual’s time horizons, the associated work imperatives and the training and personal development provisions that exist at a given point in time – the finding being that all of these aspects interlink in a continuous and coherent manner. The article also improves work activity observation methodology by analysing the positions that observers might adopt as well as different ways of apprehending things that are said or that play out in these kinds of interactions.
