Summary:The genus Podocarpus includes the largest forest treesof South Africa. Four species are known in South Africa, of which two, viz. P. falcatus and P. latifolius, occur in the Tsitsikama National Parks.The wood of both species is of economic importance. In forests where leaf and cone material is not always easily accessible, the two species may be identified by means of thestructure of the bark.The leaves of P. falcatus are falcate and the petioles twist through an angle of 90 degrees while the leaves of P. latifolius are straightand the petioles not twisted.
