Seventeen maize genotypes were evaluated in the field experiment, on aluminium toxic soil as well on amended acidic soil to identify tolerant genotypes that could be used as parent or as gene donor in breeding program. Four contrasting genotypes were used in pots experiment to identify early selection criteria which could be used to speed up the breeding process. The results obtained revealed that, in the field, five inbred lines yielded on acid soil at least 1.63 t/ha, and three of them exhibited relative grain yield lost due to sol acidity of less than 10%. Ear height, plant height and grain yield, were efficient in determining maize genotypes tolerant to acidic soil. In addition, plant height and seminal root elongation evaluated at 21 days after planting in pots can be efficiently used as early selection criteria to discriminate inbred lines for their tolerance to aluminium toxicity.http://www.tropicultura.org/text/v29n2/94.pdfAcidityearly selectionaluminium toxicityZea maysCameroon |
