Description
Summary:In this article I study Shaftesbury’s philosophy of nature with the aim to analyze the ideas that are at the basis of his aesthetic conception of the natural world. In the first part of the article I examine the meaning and function of his theistic vison of the universe in relation to the british religious and cultural context of early eightenth-century. In the second part, I study the aesthetic view of nature unfolded in The Moralists. Following this work, I examine the concepts of order, harmony, simplicity, chain of being, simpathy, infinity and unity; exploring the aesthetic and ethic dimension of every concept, and specifying their particular role in respect to the general map of nature drawn by the author. Finally, the third part of the article is devoted to the study of Shaftesbury’s conception of landscape.
