Description
Summary:Based on observations of and interviews with staff working in four new French prisons as part of a research project conducted between 2012 and 2014, the present contribution describes the significant impact that these establishments’ spatial planning and operations had, on guards in particular. Major changes to work relationships meant that the new work organisation would be severely criticised by the guards. Issues included a decrease in groupwork; fewer interactions with prisoners; and new problems with a prison adminstration more likely now to task guards with missions capable of causing distress and even suffering.
