Description
Summary:The debate over historians’ use of speeches in their narratives engaged numerous scholars and historiographers during the Early Modern period all across Europe. Some of them viewed the inclusion of speeches as a sign of the greatness of history insomuch as the speeches linked historical writing to oratory and rhetoric. On the other hand, there were others who mistrusted the speeches for they revealed how apart history and truth were. In this anthology I include chapters or passages of almost thirty artes historicae dealing with the subject. Brief commentaries on the texts are added. Texts range from the late Cinquecento to the first waves of the Enlightenment.
