Summary:Organized volunteering in the socialist societies of Poland and Czechoslovakia (1945–1989) led to a self-organization typical of the region. In the Red Cross it was based on hundreds of thousands of volunteering women and youth. Using the terms volunteering and self-organization, this article examines how their humanitarian engagement was possible under communist rule and to what extent it reflected socialist gender roles.
