Description
Summary:Purpose. To evaluate a condition of ciliary body epithelium after laser and ultrasound phacofragmentation.Material and methods. Electron microscopy of ciliary body epithelium was conducted in 3 cadaver eyes after the laser (Nd:YAG 1.44µm) phacofragmentation with the Russian device «RAKOT» and in 3 fellow eyes – after the ultrasound phacoemulsification using the «Millenium» phaco-machine.Results. After the ultrasound phacoemulsification the electron optical density of pigment and pigment-free cells of ciliary body epithelium cytoplasm and mitochondrial matrix is porous compared with normal ultra-structure after the laser phacofragmentation.Conclusion. The electron microscopy reveals a morphological basis of a higher clinical safety for the laser destruction of a hazy lens, for pigment and pigment-free cells of ciliary body epithelium in comparison with ultrasonic phacoemulsification used in cataract surgery.
