In my approach, I am analyzing recent historical events and also the present realities as they are reflected by the World Bank development indicators, as well as compelling surveys results from several polls conducted in Moldova in the last years. The paper focuses on the current situation of Romanians in the Republic of Moldova through the lens of political decisions taken in the past. The main finding of the research is that the economic decline, social tensions, interethnic conflicts and the unstable foreign policy of the young state is due in a high degree to the issues of identity politics and culture. The building of a “Moldovan identity” in contrast to the Romanian identity has failed. The chances of integration of Moldova in the family of European nations has decreased substantially. In such conditions, the citizens of the independent state are losing the feeling of “ethnic singularity” directly affecting the statehood of the country.https://79dd720e-4b65-4316-bb39-526d8ea1c51d.filesusr.com/ugd/d1cf60_3a31964040984f9bb1a2136e83d90570.pdfrepublic of moldova; identity politics; interethnic conflicts; romania; economic decline
