Summary: | As opposed to geography which appears as a form of pure academic knowledge, the field of urbanism consists in practical knowledge supporting concrete action. The field of urban studies, which emerged in the 1960s and 1970s, is tangible proof that it is possible to take a critical distance from practical action, although this field developed outside academia in France. However, the critical distance associated with political action continues to characterize urban studies. The current context is increasingly complex insofar as the objects under study are increasingly diverse, depending on the various cities which are analyzed. |
