Description
Summary:In this paper, I present research results related to aspects of the social life of young migrant manual workers at small workshops in HCMC. Social networks, social relations, living and working conditions, income and access to urban social services are explored and analyzed. My point is that the social life of the workers is established from their relationship with the workshops’ owners and their co-workers at their workplaces and living spheres which are “emotional,” “kindred,” “ethnic,” and “local.” Accordingly, the workshops are conceived as “industrially economic households” and “sub-cultures” which are abundant in the context of urbanization in Hochiminh City.
