Summary: | The historical novel Ceccarella Carafa (1853-1854), by the Neapolitan scholar Filippo Volpicella, offers a vivid portrait of Aragonese Naples during the celebrations for the seizure of Granada (1492). The city is the setting for young Ceccarella Carafa’s love for Riccardo Capece, a love contrasted by the Duke of Calabria, Alfonso II. The essay focuses on the presence of artists and men of letters among the characters of the narration, with particular attention to Iacopo Sannazaro; also, it examines the quotations that Volpicella derives from Arcadia (following Giovanni Pontano’s exegesis of eclogue XII), as well as from the farce La presa di Granata. |
