Description
Summary:Two main gnoseological methods of the philosophical system of John ScottusEriugena are his rationalism and strict adherence to the Holy Scripture. The carolingianphilosopher interprets man’s ratioas the image of God in a human being and as an uni-versal foundation of the process of return of cosmos to the Creator. At the same timeEriugena thinks that the only reliable authority is the Holy Scripture where one may findthe final sense of the created world. There is no contradiction between these premises inEriugena’s system since both the human mind and Bible are the most perfect theopha-nies. A philosopher should discern the Bible’s language and give it correct interpretation. In this sense the system of John Scottus may be considered to be an extended philo-sophical exegesis of the Holy Scripture
