Summary:This article presents the results of doctoral research centered on manifestations of taste in the home and in decoration. The house is analyzed as a place for acquiring social dispositions and symbolic struggles between elite segments of Recife (Pernambuco). The research is based on 20 interviews with homeowners conducted by an important Recife newspaper, analysis of documentary sources, and observation of interior design shows.
