Summary: | This article discusses the complex relationships between politics and anthropology through an analysis of the recent history of social engineering that transformed policies designed to reduce class inequalities into policies to reduce « racial » inequality. To do this I recall my own experience of almost five decades of research and teaching. While aware of the pitfalls in any personal narrative, I confront the challenge of this daring exercise in personal ethnography, putting myself in the position of my own informant. |
