Description
Summary:The diverse critical readings of Pedro de Urdemalas use to focus on some of their aspects (the picaresque characteristics, the world of theatre, etc.), but overlooks a series of religious elements that, nevertheless, acts as background material in the play. An examination in the light of religion evidences the significance of some Cervantes’ favourite themes (the marriage, the free will, the mock of superstitions) while outlines the construction of the protagonist, who, between his tricks, thinks about the morality of the individual action, in a flying case of conscience which allows to understand the positive dimension that acquires from the folkloric tradition.
