Summary:Cultivation theory is among the most discussed in the sociology of mass communication. However, it raises more passions than it does analyses and critical arguments. This article attempts to present the approach in all of its complexity and to situate it in relation to its critics. Indeed, if the effects of mass media in the formation and transmission of knowledge are no longer in doubt, cultivation theory represents one which is committed to rendering this visible.
