The universe consisted of 144 diabetics who presented to the dental clinic in the period of time herein declared, of which a sample of 70 patients older than 20 years was selected.

Results: there was a majority of females (60 %), of the 35 to 59 age group of years (51,4 %) and as associated factors the bacterial dental plaque (in 71,4 % of patients) and dental calculus (54,3 %) prevailed. The initially diagnosed periodontopathies were: chronic edematous gingivitis (8 patients), fibro-edematous gingivitis (6 patients) and adult chronic periodontitis (56 patients). Once the first-level comprehensive dental attention was achieved, chronic edematous gingivitis and fibro-edematous edema were eliminated; the 6 patients with the latter remained with fibrous gums, but without surgical criterion. The 56 patients suffering from chronic periodontitis remained with sequela of the disease, but it was found inactive at the end of the research.
Conclusions: the effectiveness of the intervention was proven by means of the elimination or modification of the periodontal diseases and associated factors, helping to avoid tooth loss.http://revzoilomarinello.sld.cu/index.php/zmv/article/view/1248diabetes mellitusperiodontal diseasesoral medicine
