Summary:This article aims to elucidate the media’s treatment of mental health, and more specifically schizophrenia, from the perspective of people with mental health disorders and their families. It draws on a qualitative study based on 18 interviews with people with mental health disorders, members of their families, and healthcare professionals at mental health institutions. In terms of the results, the article aims to open up discussion on prospective avenues for changing representations of mental health and the people they affect.
