Its purview embraced all the variegated aspects of local society: the Magistrato thus oversaw the large political issues but also dealt with public order, in some cases even intervening in the most intimate aspects of the day-to-day private conduct of each individual. To effectively pursue its expanding surveillance activity, between the 16th and 18th centuries the Magistrato compiled fourteen volumes of lists the upkeep of which, in addition to serving practical administrative purposes, betrayed a political will to vindicate, legitimate and assure historical continuity.http://journals.openedition.org/mcv/5734controlfreedomlegitimationlistsvindicationsecurity
