Summary: | There are strong correlations and analogies between the concepts of identity and mask: the identity can be materialized by a mask, used in a strategic and circumstantial way, and the mask can create at the same time a temporary identity, with which an individual attempts to hide or reveal himself. Taking this correlation as a starting point and delving into the notion of social stigma, this article tries to explain the utilization of a contemporary mask: the balaclava or ski mask of the shoeshine child and adolescent boys in the streets of La Paz, which constitutes a unique case in the Andean countries. |
